By 2010 the Internet has endured ten years of US government control of the Internet DNS system through its private contractor ICANN. In late 2010 the US is debating legislation that would allow for rapid takedown of web site domain names used by sites that violate intellectual property laws and the potential for abuse, corruption and error combined with the US Department of Homeland Security going ahead and taking down websites before the law is even passed is felt to be just cause to some people to opt out of the Legacy DNS in an effort led by The Pirate Bay.
